The #1 Rule: Your Sleep Direction
In the Eight Mansions (八宅) system, the direction your head points while sleeping should align with one of your four auspicious directions. This is not about which way the room faces — it's about your personal magnetic alignment.
Your best sleep direction is your Yan Nian (延年) direction, which governs longevity, relationships, and health. Your second choice is Tian Yi (天医), the Health direction.
Bed Placement Principles
The Command Position
Place your bed so that you can see the door while lying down, without being directly in line with it. This is the "command position" — it subconsciously signals safety to your nervous system, enabling deeper rest. In feng shui terms, you receive the flow of incoming chi without being struck by it directly.
What to Avoid
- Feet pointing directly at the door — the "coffin position" in Chinese tradition. Disrupts sleep quality and creates an unsettled feeling.
- Under a window — chi flows in and out all night, making sleep restless. If unavoidable, install solid curtains and a solid headboard.
- Under a sloped ceiling or beam — creates pressure energy over the body. Use a canopy bed or soften with fabric.
- Sharing a wall with a toilet — the draining water energy affects the wall's chi. Use a wooden panel or bookcase as a buffer.
Headboard Rules
Always use a solid headboard — wood is ideal, upholstered is fine. Avoid headboards with bars or cutouts (symbolically "divided energy"). The headboard should be against a solid wall, never beneath a window.
Bedroom Colors by Element
Choose your bedroom palette based on your personal Five Element type (derived from your birth year). The goal is to support your element without overwhelming it.
Mirror Placement Rules
Mirrors are arguably the most discussed feng shui element in the bedroom — and the most misunderstood.
- Never facing the bed: A mirror that reflects you while sleeping is said to drain vitality and invite a "third energy" into the relationship.
- Never directly opposite the door: This bounces chi back out before it can circulate.
- Best position: On the inside of a wardrobe door, or on a side wall where it doesn't reflect the sleeping area.
Feng Shui Cures for Common Bedroom Problems
Insomnia & Restlessness
- Reposition the bed to the command position
- Place an amethyst cluster on the bedside table (Earth energy, calming)
- Remove electronics and their EMF fields — especially TVs and WiFi routers
- Use blackout curtains to symbolically "close off" the outside world
Stagnant Relationship Energy
- Pair objects on both bedsides — two lamps, two plants, matching nightstands
- Place rose quartz in the Southwest corner (the Relationship bagua area)
- Remove single-person artwork. Choose imagery that depicts pairs.
- Ensure both partners can access the bed from their own side
